I loved to draw when I was a kid.The interest and time to pursue that path got lost to all of the other shiny things that life throws your way. What did remain was the admiration I felt toward those that did choose to pursue their artistic talents. The conscious realization of these feelings really sank in as I have watched our daughter grow older. Sure I am biased, but she is amazingly talented and I want to do all I can to encourage her growth in that area.
We sit at the kitchen table and draw, color and sculpt and we try to make every Home Depot Kids Workshop we can. As part of this process I bought the book You Can Draw in 30 Days by Mark Kistler. As I went through the step-by-step process laid out in the book, I began creating a sketchbook. One of the biggest lessons I learned was to relax and let things take shape. One of those things was a unique corn cob design.
This corn cob took shape as I came to the realizations about simple designs and comfortable, quality clothing mentioned in the previous post titled, The Beginning. The natural step seemed to be the marriage of those realizations and the new design that I had created; our inaugural products. This, in turn, led me to another realization: How amazing would it be to be a part of bringing other designer's talent and vision to light. This would accomplish two things: 1. Give the submitting artist the experience of sharing their work with others and 2. Helping someone feel what it is to have that (or yet another) favorite t-shirt, cap or piece of clothing.
I think the first accomplishment is a REALLY cool one. I believe a great deal of art is about looking inward and expressing something that inspires the artist, but I also think it is incredibly rewarding to know that others "get" it as well. The second result above could be argued as trivial. Still, it could be argued as another one of those many small moments that just make life worth it.
So... to accomplish this, we welcome others to submit designs. Together, we can grow this brand to be one known for its commitment to inspiring designs on quality, contemporary clothing. We want the Modest Mammoth to be known for its choices of distinguished artwork and selection of current trends in clothing. We will continue to grow our artist compensation with success but we want one of the benefits to become the honor of being asked for the use of your design on a product.
We have a long way to go. I love to draw but have never been amazing at it. Even if I were, I couldn't churn out the number of designs we would like to see offered by the Modest Mammoth.
Submit your unique, original and inspired artwork. Artists are compensated with a flat fee and a percentage of each item that is sold. We also provide information about the submission and recognition of the designer on our site and with every shipment.
